The City Hall

In 1896, the city council, chaired by the mayor Ferenc Gödri, initiated the building of a bérpalota, an ornate tenement, to commemorate the millennium passed since the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. The construction, based on the plans of the engineer József Dancs, was finished by the end of October 1897. The tenement building could become the respective city hall only from 1 January 1904, as the buildings of the then established Tobacco Factory were not ready yet. Owing to interior reconstructions in the past decades, a spacious boardroom was installed, as well as a marriage hall on the first floor of the neighbouring building of the former savings bank. In 2015, the finials, the flagpole of the dome, the tin ventilators, as well as the balconies were restored, in accordance with the original blueprints.
