The Arcade House

The city centre, as we know it today, started to take shape at the beginning of the 19th century. The first building of the area was the arcaded, classicist headquarters of the Székely hussar regiment between 1818-1822. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, due to the abolishment of the Székely border guards, the district court moved into the building. It functioned as a death row as well; József Váradi and Ferenc Bartalis, from Háromszék, the organizers of the plot against the Habsburgs, spent their last evening before their execution here, in 1854. Later the building became the property of the Székely Tanalap (a fund supporting students), then, for decades, it was home to the court of justice of the Sepsi district, as well as to the land registry. Between 1958 and 2002 the County Archive was located here. In the early 2000s, there were repair works regarding the century-old landfill. After a complete overhaul made by the local government, the building was inaugurated in 2008.
